Role + Scope
I joined KATERRA's Advanced Products team to build and lead their design practice. Starting as an individual contributor, I built a four person design studio to develop a holistic view across KATERRA's hardware and software products.
Working with the Technology group I helped shape how technology was designed and adopted by the humans that need to use it - at the desks of our designers, on the factory floor, and on the construction site.
At KATERRA I was lucky enough to use my entire design “stack” (Architecture, Product Design, Design Innovation) in the practice of conceiving / building/shipping products in consumer spaces (Mobile/SmartTV/SmartHome), while getting to work at the world's most advanced and innovative construction company.
Outcome
Championed KOS platform product vision - identifying the need to unify separate SW initiatives into a single building wide Saas system to reduce development effort and user adoption
Drove KOS V1 to deployment-ready - owned user-facing product direction before a PM hire, leading design across provisioning, device management, HVAC, and lighting
Established SPATIAL as Katerra's first unified design system - adopted across touch displays, HMIs, desktop, mobile to reduce friction and unifying surfaces
Drove TOW to pre-production - defined and oversaw design of a unified wall-mounted hardware interface for thermostat and lighting control, reaching manufacturing readiness,
Built the digital software design practice from solo contributor to a studio of 5 -establishing culture, practice, cross-functional workflows to unify Katerra's tech footprint

Challenges & Problems
As KATERRA’s buildings became more connected, how would Property Owners manage and service their connected buildings and products? How might we create a first-class experience that showcased KATERRA’s power as a technology company?
KATERRA needed to integrate multiple connected products into their buildings, but didn’t want to use 3rd party platforms. The technology team was working on the KATERRA Sensor Fabric.
I identified the need of having a single experience across all their devices, and a single interface for Property Owners.
This is my design journey to conceive of the vision and elaborate on the first release with a small team of product designers.
